Pair production in counter-propagating laser beams

چکیده

Based on an analysis of a specific electron trajectory in counterpropagating beams, Bell & Kirk (PRL 101, 200403 (2008)) recently suggested that laboratory lasers may shortly be able to produce significant numbers of electronpositron pairs. We confirm their results using an improved treatment of nonlinear Compton scattering in the laser beams. Implementing an algorithm that integrates classical electron trajectories, we then examine a wide range of laser pulse shapes and polarizations. We find that counter-propagating, linearly polarized beams, with either aligned or crossed orientation, are likely to initiate a pair avalanche at intensities of approximately 10 Wcm per beam. The same result is found by modelling one of the beams as a wave reflected at the surface of an overdense solid. PACS numbers: 12.20.-m, 52.27.Ep, 52.38.Ph Submitted to: Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion

Realising nonperturbative QED

We consider the possibility of experimental verification of vacuum ee pair creation at the focus of two counter-propagating optical laser beams with intensities 10-10 W/cm, achievable with presentday petawatt lasers, and approaching the Schwinger limit: 10 W/cm to be reached at ELI. Our approach is based on the collisionless kinetic equation for the evolution of the e and e− distribution functi...

Sensitivity Enhancement of Ring Laser Gyroscope Using Dielectric-Graphene Photonic Crystal

In a ring laser gyroscope, due to the rotation and the Sagnac effect, a phase difference between the two counter-propagating beams is generated. In this device, the higher phase difference between these two beams causes the better the interference pattern detection, and thus the sensitivity is increased. In this paper, the effect of inserting a dielectric-graphene photonic crystal inside a ring...

Dense GeV electron–positron pairs generated by lasers in near-critical-density plasmas

Pair production can be triggered by high-intensity lasers via the Breit-Wheeler process. However, the straightforward laser-laser colliding for copious numbers of pair creation requires light intensities several orders of magnitude higher than possible with the ongoing laser facilities. Despite the numerous proposed approaches, creating high-energy-density pair plasmas in laboratories is still ...

Quantum properties of backward parametric down - conversion

Backward parametric down-conversion, in which one of the twin beams is generated in the opposite direction with respect to the pump laser source (Fig.1a), was theoretically predicted fifty years ago, but only recently became experimentally accessible [1], due the challenges involved in the fabrication of the required submicrometer poling period. A peculiarity of this geometry is the presence of...

Excitation of accelerating plasma waves by counter-propagating laser beams

Generation of accelerating plasma waves using two counter-propagating laser beams is considered. Colliding-beam accelerator requires two laser pulses: the long pump and the short timing beam. We emphasize the similarities and differences between the conventional laser wakefield accelerator and the colliding-beam accelerator (CBA). The highly-nonlinear nature of the wake excitation is explained ...
